First Day of Kindergarten!!!

It's only one week after the first day of kindergarten.  Since the whole school year is like 100 days, then technically I'm only like 1/25 behind.  That's not too bad, right?  Right?

So on the first day of school, David ate breakfast at home.  This is not something he's used to.  He's eaten breakfast at school (day-care) pretty much his whole life.  Well, that's not entirely true, we do try to feed him on the weekends.

Anyway.

I should warn you - there are a lot of pictures.  It's my duty, and I took it very seriously.  You are seeing only a very small fraction of the pictures that exist to commemorate such a momentous occasion.

Here's David posing as we were walking down the alley way toward the school.
And here he is.  You know. Actually walking.
More pictures while we were walking, but now you can see the school.  This is actually the back of the school.  If we walk out our garage, across one street, down an alley for one house, we're next to the fencing at the back of the school.  It's not a bad walk (at least we say that now when it's "nice" outside.  I'll get back to you in January).  Can you believe I just called August in Dallas "nice".  Yeah, whatever.
And here is his happy smiling face as we're walking up to the door of the school.  He was so excited.  Doesn't he look proud?!?
And here he is walking into his classroom.  That's his teacher.  She's about the cutest thing I've ever seen.  Seriously, she's so sweet and amazing with the kids I just want to take her home.
She gave each of the kids a big hug as they walked in to her room.  She knew David by name, you know, since he was the ONLY kid in her class that didn't show up for Meet-The-Teacher night the Thursday before.  It's just his education, right?  We were at DISNEY WORLD!!

He found his seat with some play-doh ready and waiting for him.
His Daddy helped him get his backpack into his cubby (or covey as David calls it) and he found a surprise in there!  I think those little bags were probably handed out at Meet-The-Teacher night, but David was thrilled to see a surprise waiting for him.
He quickly sat down and started working on his "assignment".  There were plenty of parents milling about.  Lots of cameras, but I actually didn't see any tears!  Quite impressive!
He got a big hug from his Mommy.  Doesn't he look so grown up?!?!
And then we left.  We launched our little boy into the world of homework, assignments, deadlines, lunch money, books, backpacks, friends, kids that are mean, things that are "not fair", all this and Mommy didn't even shed a tear.  I think the chaos of it all somehow made it impossible to cry about it.  Then I walked back home, I didn't drive away and I think that made it easier as well.

David did get picked up by Creme in the afternoon.  You better believe I was calling them every 10 minutes after 3:05 to make sure they HAD DAVID ON THE BUS.  Can you call Ms. Melissa (the driver) and make sure she has him?  Why aren't they back yet?  Are you SURE she's got him on the bus?  How many schools do you go to?  What order do you go in?  How long is David on the bus? Does he get a snack when he gets back?  He might be hungry you know, they have lunch at 10:20!!!!  IS HE THERE YET?!?!?!?

Okay, so I wasn't quite THAT bad, but I did call and check to make sure he was there.  Of course, he was there.  They run this like a well oiled machine.

Although maybe they forgot to grease the wheels on Wednesday.  See, CISD has assessments of all the Kindergartners the first week of school.  Creme is well aware, they knew more about it than me.  David's assessment was at 2:30 on Wednesday, the first day of the assessments.  Now Creme is protective of their charges, so they don't let the Creme kids stay at school other than the day of their assessments (this process is 3 days long).  That means that Creme runs 2 times.  Once at noon for the kids who are not being assessed, once at 3 for the ones that are.  CISD does provide care for that time period for free.  Unfortunately, David's teacher forgot and put David on the noon bus on Wednesday.  The bus driver knows she's not supposed to have David, so calls Creme, who calls me.  She can't take him back in to the school since she has a bus full of kids, so they tell me...anyway, not important, but they end up taking David back to Creme.  I tell them I'll come get him & take him back to school for the assessment, then bring him back to Creme at 3.  I'll just work from home for the rest of the day.  I tell John, he says his afternoon is open, so he can do it (I was going to have to cancel a meeting).  So, John picks David up from Creme and takes him back to school.  His teacher feels terrible, and assures John that she'll get David to the school's care and then on the 3:00 Creme bus.  What she doesn't know is that there isn't a 3:00 Creme bus.  They picked up all their kids at noon!  So they call me from school about 3:30 saying that David's in the office and who is coming to get him?!?!  By the time I get John, he's already walking toward the school.  When I get to Creme that afternoon to get Katherine, they tell me that the school had ALSO called them (that makes THREE PEOPLE they called) and before they found out that John was on the way, they were halfway there in the bus again.  What a mess.  Yep, I've made a very nice first impression with David's school of higher learning.  They're gonna LOVE me!

Great pics! That is so great that school is so close. Play Doh waiting at the table? Can I go to Kindergarten? haha! That's a sweet picture of Mommy giving Goodbye Sugars.

He does look so big, grown up and proud. What a nightmare with the transportation on assesment day but it sounds like it all worked out fine in the end. Next post you'll have to tell us what he thinks after his first week at school.

I didn't know that his school was so close to your house. How wonderful! The pictures are adorable and I'm so glad you like his teacher. Can't believe all of the craziness of the first week!
