First of all, David's behavior is finally on a uphill turn. He earned computer privileges back at school on Friday and he actually behaved very well this weekend! Ironically, given my occupation, David is apparently very motivated by money! His teacher mentioned to us that she's going to use an "allowance" motivator during the summer with her class. She said David got very excited about that. I can just imagine...it's COUNTING!! IT'S MONEY!! Really, why didn't we think of that?!!?
So we totally stole her idea and started it this weekend. David earns money for doing his "jobs" as he calls them. Funny aside story - I told David one time that when he grows up, he'll get a job. He said, "Mommy, I already have a job!" Me: "You do? What is it?" David: "Putting up the silverware!"
Ummm, okay?
Anyway, he earns money for doing stuff around the house - emptying the silverware tray from the dishwasher, putting up his laundry, helping with whatever project we're doing, etc. He loses money for throwing a fit, talking back, generally being a toot. So, this weekend, he started with $0.57 that he already had and he earned up to $1.38 I believe. He knows EXACTLY how much he has and he'll tell you anytime you want to know. He and John found a piggy bank online that will keep track of his money - he's understandably utterly thrilled.
So far, the money? It is talking. Two times tonight when we told him to do something that he normally might not want to do, know what his response was? "Happy to do it!"
Ummm, can I just bottle that up?!?!
Also, David went to Kindergarten Round-Up last week. This was at the public school across the street from our house. I'm having a hard time explaining the difference to him - between pre-school (which we've always called school) and actually starting "school". Anyway, he had a good time, and I had one of my most proud moments as a mommy!
We were looking at the classrooms, and David ran to the middle of the big carpet in the back and got the teacher's attention and asked, "Is this where we'll have Bible time?"
YIPPEE!!! My son thinks that Bible time is just a normal part of any school day! Wow - that was an awesome moment for me...and a scary one all at the same time. I mean, no more Bible time when he starts school! Plus, with Katherine at her day-care, she'll never have that experience! Eesh, sometimes this parenting stuff is fun and hard atexactlythesametime!
Finally, Katherine is starting to laugh! I haven't been able to get it on video yet, but it's so cute! She's done it to John a few times, and Saturday morning, she laughed at David being silly to her. It's so fun to hear those adorable little coos! I have to get them on video so I can revisit when she's 16 and we're fighting about her curfew!
Since I know this is the only reason you come to the blog anyway, here are a couple of pictures. David and Katherine are watching Baby Einstein together. Don't they look like they're just having a regular conversation?
This is when David got silly and I think Katherine is just rolling her eyes at him. Oh goodness, it's already started!!

Great pictures of David and Katherine chatting and his sillyness. This parenting stuff IS hard sometimes. I'm going to cheat and comment about the last few posts in this comment. How nice that John posted something for you on Mother's day. It's nice to see it in black and white sometimes. Grief bursts is a good term to describe the feelings. I know the joy you get from being a mom yourself helps but its still hard.
HA! Took you five years to figure that boy out! Now have fun with him for the next 10 years until he hates you for a while... ;-)
I love how Katherine is just looking way in the David-Silly picture. Gosh I love girls! Sounds like David is doing well on the "allowance" system. Wohoo!
I am laughing so hard at the picture of your desk drawer...ah, it takes me back to the good times.
The allowance thing sounds awesome and the side by side chairs were VERY cute.
John - bravo on the mom's day message. You two are a good match...made in heaven, you might say.
So cindy - get anything good at the sale?
