We're here, we're safe, and we're still slightly jet-lagged!
Here are some very initial observations from Germany!
When we got here, we were starving and asked the front desk at the hotel where we might be able to eat. They told us there is another hotel restaurant about a 3 minute walk away and a beer garden about a 15 minute walk away. We opted for the closer, although it sure looked like a beer garden to us!
While we were walking to dinner, Katherine said, "Yuck, it smells like nature out here!"
She's drinking coke, but in a wine glass, it sure looks like red wine!
On to Day #1:
It's HOT! 33 degrees Celsius and no A/C to be found. We walked to a hardware store first thing to find a Vornado-like fan, but were unlucky. Also went to another store; it seemed kind of like a CVS or something? We weren't really sure. So - our first trip out was less-than-productive.
Then, because we were hot, we decided to get in the car (because, hello, A/C!!) and drive around. John's getting better at driving, although we're still unsure about the "right on red" rule. People drive FAST here...shocker.
When we got back to the hotel, we decided that internet, although it's not free, is a requirement, so we got that. Then we were able to find the closest grocery store (about a 3 minute walk) and finally had a productive outing!
Some interesting things about the grocery store - they don't merchandise things at the store we went to. The items are placed on the shelves in the boxes from the shipper, you just pull the items you want out of the boxes. Also, the person who checked us out was sitting in a chair - she didn't put anything in bags, just moved the items across the scanner (very quickly) and shoved them to us to put in the bags (that we had to buy). Also, if you want to use a shopping cart in the store, it costs! It's not much, less than $1USD, but we thought that was interesting too!
I'll post again about what we did in London for the lay-over, we actually got to see some cool stuff! We're going to venture out again this evening to look at a couple of neighborhoods that John mapped before we got here. Wish us luck!

Glad to see you made it safe. That place looks like a beer garden too.
