A Day (Actually 4) with David & Katherine

While John & Cindy had some well deserved time away--the trip to San Francisco you've read about--Grandmother Walker (my Mom) and I were entrusted with the care of David and Katherine. We could not pass on Cindy's invitation to post some highlights of our special time with the kids w.

Always planning ahead, John & Cindy had prepared 4 pages of information on normal routines, instructions, schedules, directions, maps--everything we needed to know to manage two children and a household for 4 days. Some might laugh--but we appreciated every word and reviewed the pages several times a day--the Ferguson Four keep a very busy schedule. We also had a couple of hours of Q & A--drinking from the fire hydrant--as John said, of last minute thoughts and changes to discuss before their late evening flight's departure. We felt equipped and ready for duty!
The kids were OK with their parents departure--David snapped this photo as he waved good bye. He did worry a little as we drove away, but decided it was OK since Mom and Dad were not going to Disney World, in which case he announced he would have "been really ticked."
First challenge--to get the kids and ourselves from DFW airport back to the house after dropping John & Cindy off--no small task when you are unfamiliar with Dallas. We did fine--except for the toll booth--wrong lane for the T-tag equipped mini van.
Safely home, bedtime routine for both kids a piece of cake, we unpacked and decided it is time for the great/grandmothers to rest up for the next day.

David is the morning alarm clock--he has always been an early riser--up before the sun and ready for action. Katherine, on the other hand, enjoys her beauty sleep and wakes up slowly--it is so sweet! Once dressed, shoes on (Katherine likes to do things by herself--thank you) back-packs loaded, instructions verified, we take off for Creme. David knows the check-in codes and Katherine also takes her turn at the computer touch screen.

Mom and I spent the day on some jewelry errands, then before we knew it, time to get the kids --check out the action on video (believe me, I did ask and receive special permission to have the camera!)

Then we were all off to Cottonwood Creek to find out which 1st grade class David was in. Everyone at the school seemed to know David and he was so excited to see friends and teachers--especially Sophia---they were nose to nose and talking fast about the classes and who was in which one--so cute!

In addition to the kids' activities, Mom had a jewelry show in Plano hosted by my cousin Janie at her Pack n Mail store. She had a great show and lots of fun with many new friends and customers, so it ran a little long. We had planned that Janie would drive Mom back to Coppell so I could be sure to get David and Katherine picked up, money delivered to the soccer coach and get to Meet the Teacher night--all before 6:00 pm. We made two out of three, grabbed some Market Street from the drive thru (a great time saver in my at home routine) and headed to the house. I was a little surprised that Mom and Janie had not beat us home, but really surprised when they called ME for directions since they were lost. That is funny in the context of the week's hysterical stories of my driving adventures--even with the help of Google maps and two GPS systems, I discovered all kinds of new routes driving from point A to Point B, and most involved some backtracking!!

Soccer filled our time Friday night and Saturday as David's team was an entry in the Coppell Cup Tournament--they placed 2nd! I surely must now qualify as a Soccer Grandmom--four games in less that 25 hours in Dallas' 100 degree heat was almost too much for 6 year old boys, and a noteworthy accomplishment for Grandmothers!

While David and I were at the soccer field, Mom and Katherine were hanging out with each other at home. They really developed a special bond and Mom is still talking about their time together. Don't be surprised if she shows up on the Ferguson door step to get a "Katherine fix"--she is threatening to get on a plane.

Cindy called once a day to check on us and talk to the kids. Here is Katherine on one of the calls---precious!

This post could be 4 days long--so much more to share. A DVD movie project is underway, and scheduled for release by Christmas! Until then, thank you for sharing the kids, and allowing us to keep them. We had the best time ever--4 days and a lifetime of memories. There is nothing like spending time with grandchildren.

Nice job Meme. Thanks for putting all of that together. It was cool to see what was going on at the other end of the phone call. Let us know if you figure out how you can get back at us for the soccer tournament duties.

Thanks Meme!!! Now I know why Katherine won't let me hold her when I take her into Creme ;-)

My kids are blessed beyond measure to have such wonderful great/grandmothers who share their time and energy. They still talk about their weekend as well.

Tell Grandmother to come on - we'll just move her in!!
