For All My Blogging Friends

If you don't have a blog or know someone who has a blog, then you can skip this post.  Nothing about the family in this one - just about blogs.

Blurb.com is a fairly common site to upload your blog and have it printed into a book.  You know, for paranoid people like us, it's nice to have a backup copy.  Plus, in the event that I never catch up with scrapbooking, the blog might just have to suffice.

Blurb is a bit of a pain.  I've tried it before, and when it *finally* uploaded my blog, it was all a mess.  I had to do lots of work to straighten it out and I even gave up.  I thought I'd save it for later.

Well, later came this weekend and I decided to get to work.  What I didn't know is that Blurb quit supporting uploads from Blogger.  WHAT?!?!?!  Blogger is the most common blogging platform in the blog-o-sphere.  It's insane to think they just quit supporting it.  Turns out Blogger changed some code somewhere and Blurb can't figure out how to change their code to fix it..."blah, blah, blah" is all it sounds like to me.

So the discussion thread on Blurb's site (full of people who are REALLY mad about this situation) lead me to this site:

Wow.  So, this is NOT perfect.  It doesn't claim to be.  However, you can download from your blog to the site.  It won't take more than 350 blog entries at once, so you have to limit the time period to pull.  I decided that to try them out, I'd load the 2007 entries.  I started this blog in October of 2007, so that's 3 months worth.

Uploaded like a DREAM!  It was pretty fast, and then put it all into an 8.5x11 book.  It's not perfect, let me say that again.  The editing is pretty limited.  You can show or hide the comments, but you have to do it one at a time.  I just went through all of mine & said to "put it in the book".  It doesn't put the comments after the blog entries, it puts them after ALL the blog entries.  Again, NOT perfect.

However, the 2007 portion of my blog is now being printed into some kind of book form and will be mailed to me estimated by 12/19.  I'm going to print the 1st half of 2008 next, but I thought I'd wait to get my book first.

They also have a download option, so I did that as well.  They just email you a .pdf file of your blog.  It's only $3, but it's an easy way to keep a backup copy.

Anyway, for any of you who want to print your blog, I'll let you know when the book comes in what I think of it.  So far, I'm WAY happier with this site than Blurb.

Oh - also meant to tell you - when I saw I couldn't upload to Blurb, I decided to try to cut & paste.  Can't be that hard, right?  WRONG!!  I did FOUR entries and it took me over 2 hours.  Their site is a bit finicky and the edits are very laborious.  Just my opinion, but I thought I'd share.

AHHHH!!! I can't believe that - I am still working on her first book, so I guess I will finish that one and use your site for the second year.

Thanks for publishing your research. I'm sure I'll be checking it out soon now that I'm in Book Mode.

That's great! I'm glad you posted all of that because I've been thinking of doing that very thing. I've done a horrible job keeping up with a scrapbook, so I thought the same: if only I could just print out my blog, that would work... But, I didn't get around to looking at how to do it. I'll definitely look into that! Thanks!
